One more angel
I coveret til John Patitucci’s album, One More Angel kan man læse følgende:
One More Angel is an album that reflects many of John Patitucci’s recent experiences, experiences both joyful and painful.
Primary among these, Patitucci married Eastman School of Music-trained cellist Sachi Patitucci, whose name you can see in the credits to this recording. The Patituccis recited their vows on May 7, 1995. “Sachi is my true spiritual soulmate,” says the bassist-leader. “I see now that this is what marriage is supposed to be.”
While John and Sachi have come to know the bliss of love, they have also encountered great pain. Their first pregnancy, a child they named Angel Patitucci, ended in miscarriage on November 10, 1996. “Of course, we were both devastated,” says John. “One way that God helped me through all of this was to give me ten new tunes.” One of these numbers in the title track.
In between these traumatic events, the Patituccis moved from California, where John had been residing since 1982, to New York. For John, who was raised in Brooklyn, it was like going home. “Obviously, NYC is the jazz capital of the world, so this was an opportunity for me to play with a lot of different people and to devote my time to my music,” says Patitucci. “I felt I had to come back.”
Also during the period of his move, Patitucci decided to take a hiatus from the heavy touring schedule he maintained as the bassist for Chick Corea, for whom he had played in both Elektric and Acoustic bands since the mid-80s.
The emotional weight of these experiences, those changes, is mirrored by the music on One More Angel. For the recording, Patitucci drew on players he felt close to, allowing for dynamic, emotion-rich performances.
“This was like a family get-together, starting first with my brother, Thomas, on acoustic guitar, and my wife Sachi,” he says. “Alan (Pasqua) and Michael (Brecker) have always been like extended family, and even though I only began playing with Chris (Potter), it feels that way with him as well. And while I’d never played with Paul (Motian) before, it was like saying hello to a relative I hadn’t seen in years. Everybody got with the music, played incredibly and there were a lot of first takes. We did the whole record in two days, so in essence, it’s a live record.”
This collection has a reflective mood, mixing the feelings of quietude, serenity, poignancy and intensity into compelling music that will offer many rewarding listenings.
…
The future looks very promising for John Patitucci. He plans to continue to compose, and he wants to play more, particularly with his band. And he and Sachi very much want to have a child. “In addition to the two we already have in heaven,” he says. This record is lovingly dedicated to our Miya and her brother or sister, Angel, whom we never got to see. Both were born on this earth, each, One More Angel. We would also like to extend this dedication to all the eternal babies and to all parents who have lost their children.

I den del, hvor man takker folk, starter han med at skrive:
“I must first thank Jesus Christ, my creator, Savior and almighty God.”
-Colossians 1:15-20
Her er en mand, som har spillet i verdslige bands (af ret så anerkendt karakter) hele sit liv, men stadig har styr på sine prioriteringer!
Tjek manden ud:
Her spillende Bach’s Suite #1
Her i en jam med et par af verdens største bassister. Efter min mening klarer han det bedst af dem alle.
